Facial Cleansing Wipes

Sunday, 9 March 2008

A recent addition to the ready-to-use wipes market, facial wipes are pre-saturated wet or dry pads for your cleansing needs. We find out if they can beat out soap and water, and if their convenience is worth the price.

The Basics

  • Facial wipes promise a more convenient, one-step cleansing process. Many wipes also promise to not only give a deep clean, but also to remove make-up or exfoliate and tone your skin.

  • Wipes are usually available for different skin types (normal, dry, oily, sensitive), so make sure find one that’s right for you.skin.

  • Some ready-to-use wipes need to be moistened with water, others come pre-moistened in a sealed bag or container.skin.

  • Some wipes come with a strong fragrance. It’s really a personal choice, but if you are sensitive to strong smells, look for fragrance-free.skin.

  • Some wipes are larger than others. When comparing price and value, consider the sizes of each. Larger wipes are probably better, since you may end up using two smaller wipes to do the job of one larger wipe.

Be Aware

  • Ingredients such as paraben, a preservative, and any fragrances can be harsh and irritating to your skin.

  • A big caution here: “Dermatologist tested” on the label doesn’t necessarily mean it was approved. That being said, if it says for sensitive skin then the product would have been successfully tested for that skin type.

  • Though they’re convenient, especially for travelling, wipes of all kinds create a lot of extra waste. If you’re being sensitive to the environment, this is one purchase you`ll want to think twice about.

We recruited some helpers to join in our test run of these ready-to-use facial wipes.

Cleansing Test

  • Most of our testers liked the amount of cleansing foam and cleaning power generated by the Dove cloths.

  • Others liked the pre-moistened cloths for the ultimate convenience factor.

  • Some found the Life brand wipes too small and required more than one. But at that price, you’re still getting a better deal than the more expensive ones, even if you use two.

  • The scent of the Shiseido brand was popular, but the price wasn’t.

  • The Huggies Wipes, meant for cleaning babies’ bums, weren’t as moist as the ones designed for your face.

It was hard to decide among our products, but Dove’s Daily Hydrating Cleansing Cloths were popular dry cloths (add water to moisten), and the LIFE brand cloths were a good choice for the pre-moistened type.
