False Eyelashes

For a temporary plump-up of your lashes, many turn to false eyelashes. They are pretty tricky and easy to destroy, however. We find out if they're really worth the effort.

The Basics

  • False eyelashes come as either an entire upper lash, or as individual or small clumpings of lashes, which are applied as filler rather than a complete replacement.

  • There are also many colours to choose from. If you want a natural look, go for black or black-brown. If you want something fun for a night out, you can choose from a variety of colours, sheens and textures; everything from crystal stone and glitter to feathers!

  • Choose the style of lashes depending on the look you’re going for. Evenly-spaced lashes give you a more natural look. Chunky-spaced lashes add a more dramatic flare.

  • Lash glue is an important feature. Off-the-shelf drugstore lashes come with a basic adhesive that works for one application, or two if you’re careful. Make-up artists recommend using medical-type adhesive, which is much stronger.

    • Tip: if you have darker skin or if you like to wear darker make-up, choose a glue that is a dark colour. White glue dries light grey and can really stand out (not a good look!)
  • Self-adhesive lashes are handy, but they don’t always work, so you’ll want to have some lash glue on hand for touch-ups.

Other Considerations

  • If your a false lash newbie, you’ll need a few tools on hand to help you. Aside from the lashes themselves, make sure you have adhesive, tweezers, a mirror, and lots of patience!

  • You can trim false eyelashes to fit your eye width or the lash length you’re looking for, but try the original length before cutting.

We had four volunteers who wore one different lash on each eye, and then fluttered our lashes at a panel of judges to see if there was a preference.

Wear Test

  • First of all, applying the lashes (no matter what brand) is tricky and takes a lot of practice.

  • The MAC lashes gave a very full look.

  • The Ardell lashes gave the most natural look.

If you’re a first timer, we recommend buying an inexpensive pair to practice on. We also found that the Ardell gave us the most natural look, though it all depends on the style you’re going for.
