Filming in Tuscany
We just returned from shooting an episode of 'Anna and Kristina's Grocery Bag' in Tuscany, Italy. So beautiful!
We went to chef Umberto Menghi’s cooking school at Villa Delia, just outside of Pisa. What gorgeous countryside! But the very best part was definitely the food. (Not the food we made, unfortunately.) I have seriously never eaten so much in my life. Every lunch and dinner consisted of an appetizer or antipasto platter, pasta for the first course, a main course and then dessert.
Umberto took us and the rest of his cooking school students for lunch to a restaurant in a small town nearby. I don’t remember the name of the place, and I don’t think I could even find it on my own ever again, but it was one of the top 5 meals of my entire life. Salamis, cheeses, prosciuttos, bruschetta, polenta with truffles, pasta with shaved truffles, ravioli, salads, wine. I was stuffed to the gills with food and with happiness. Those Italians certainly know how to live.
Oh yes, right, we also worked there. There were some long shoot days but I think we got some great material for our episode. We got to go grocery shopping at an authentic Italian market and we rode Vespas through the countryside. That was a hoot. Except for the part where I kind of fell down and the Vespa fell on top of me. I wasn’t actually moving at the time, so just couple of bruises. I can be a bit of a klutz that way.
But perhaps the funniest moment was when we were testing pasta makers with an elderly Italian nona (grandmother) who fell in love with Anna and literally wanted to keep her. Luckily I managed to pry her away as we still had work to do!
