I have a girl crush. Crushes to be exact. Before you get all excited let’s define the term. According to the Urban Dictionary (some website I found online) a girl crush is:
“Feelings of admiration and adoration which a girl has for another girl, without wanting to shag said girl. A nonsexual attraction, usually based on veneration at some level.”
On the weekend my friend, let’s call her Carol, was telling me about meeting a man and his female companion for a drink. Carol wasn’t sure if the guy was interested in her but Carol was much more interested in his female friend. “She was just so cool and interesting, we exchanged contact information, got on Facebook right away. I didn’t even want to talk to him.”
I hear ya sister. Maybe it’s my age and waning hormones but I’m finding that men are well, men. It’s women who are so darn interesting!
The media has apparently caught on to this as we’re (finally) seeing some extraordinary parts for women on TV and in film, played by exceptionally talented women. Think Homeland, Scandal, Downton Abbey, Grey’s Anatomy, August: Osage County, American Hustle, Gravity, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Mindy Project…. I could go on. Even if women aren’t the lead characters (Mad Men) they’re certainly stealing the show.
Which brings me to my girl crushes. They’re all on TV (and film), probably because I spend far too much time watching it. They’re all cool chics and I think I could be BFFs with any one of them. Based solely on my imaginings of course.

Connie Britton from Nashville, American Horror Story, Friday Night Lights, etc. etc. Connie is one cool chic. She consistently delivers quality performances in highly rated TV shows. She manages to stay under the paparazzi radar. She’s gorgeous and doesn’t try to look half her age. And that hair, that hair! (Did you know there are Instagram pages dedicated to it?)
Zooey Deschanel from The New Girl. Quirky and beautiful, Deschanel makes me feel like it’s okay to let my inner weirdo out. I love her style, her energy and the fact that she breaks into song at random moments. Me too Zooey, me too!
Stana Katic from Castle. My crush on her is more physical. I don’t want to be with her, I want to look like her. Gorgeous. I love her hair (yes, I’m hair obsessed) and I’ve literally paused the TV so I can study her makeup. She was born in Canada and her parents are Serbs who lived in Croatia. OMG, I’m practically her! (Except that I was born in Croatia and my parents are Croatian and I live in now Canada, but close, right?)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus from a little show called Seinfeld, and also The New Adventures of Old Christine and Veep, not to mention the wonderful movie Enough Said. So talented and hilarious, I love her comedic timing and the decidedly different spin she brings to every character. (If you haven’t watched Veep yet, you must. Wicked writing.) Plus, she’s in her early 50s and if she has done anything to her face, it’s super subtle and she looks fabulous.
Jennifer Lawrence. I think we all have a crush on Jennifer Lawrence. To be 23, so talented, successful, beautiful, charming, real. To have the world at your fingertips, an Oscar on your mantle (potentially another one on its way) and a multi-million dollar deal with Dior.
I changed my mind. I actually kind of hate her. Such is the way with crushes.
