Grocery Bag FAQ: Whose house do you film in?

Tuesday, 22 November 2011 | Tags: , , ,

We rent a gorgeous home in West Vancouver to film our cook day segments. It has a large enough kitchen to fit all of our crew and equipment!

For other segments, like our post-cook day interviews, we often film at either one of our own homes. Many other segments are filmed around the Vancouver area, or on location when we do a big trip, like to the UK, Tuscany, Northern BC, or Marrakesh.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes photos of the house we used for filming seasons 3 and 4. Many of you have also asked about specific items in the kitchen. Below are answers from the homeowner:

The wide landscape painting in the sitting area (just beyond the counter peninsula) was purchased at a gallery in Vancouver called Bau Xi (on South Granville) and the artist is Peter Hoffer. The Bau Xi gallery website shows more of his work.

A nice close-up of the gorgeous brown granite counter tops. These were sourced back in 2005-6 when the homeowner renovated. With some luck, you may find something similar available now. (Chocolate cake by Anna, from Absolutely Chocolate!)

Many have asked about the backsplash tile. Here’s a close-up. The homeowner says it’s typical subway tile you can find at most home improvement stores. (That’s Anna’s hand holding the knife!)

Many have also asked about the kitchen wall clock. The owner purchased it around 2006 at Restoration Hardware. It is no longer available, but we’ve seen similar styles out there so it may just take a little hunting!

I’ve always been curious about this! Thanks for this post. Great new site. I’ve been watching you since way back in the day! Happy you recently travelled to my home province of NL for a book review – looking forward to the episode!

You are welcome! Lots of people have asked about it. It’s a pleasure to work in such a lovely kitchen. The Newfoundland episode airs tomorrow (Tuesday) on OWN Canada!

I love the “inside scoop” stuff about the two of you, the set, bios, favourite recipes, etc. Love Love Love both shows and will check for you on Facebook. Wishing you all the success in the world and looking forward to the new season.

I started watching your show about 2 months ago and think you guys are a blast! I watch mostly because you make me laugh. Continued success.

    • Anna Wallner

Glad you found us, Leslie. Thanks for watching!

My PVR keeps recording all of the old episodes (I have seen EVERY one) of the Grocery Bags but it hasn’t recorded any new ones in such a long time! Are they still airing new ones on OWN?

    • annaandkristina

Hi Kelly, thanks for watching! There haven’t been any new ones for a while. Feel free to drop a note to OWN Canada and let them know you want more! They could use a little nudge. Every little bit helps! :)

Hi Ladies. I just saw a re-run of Garlic Garlic Garlic and watched you, Anna peeling the tomatoes. I felt your pain. In case no one has mentioned it to you before, there is a better way. Put your whole tomatoes in a bowl and pour boiling water over them. Let sit for one minute and then rinse with cold water. Pierce the skin and it peels right off. Looking forward to the new season. Happy cooking!

On one of your cooking segments the chef brought a nice shaped bottle of La Bargemone Rose Wine. I checked with the LCBO here in Toronto, 0 results. Could you please tell me where I might get it. Thanks, Anna

    • annaandkristina

Dear Anna, Thanks for writing! It’s possible there are no more bottles left of the vintage that was brought by our guest chef, but your local liquor store branch should be able to order you in some newer vintages. Here’s the website for the winery http://www.bargemone.com/. Ask the liquor store manager to bring some in for you!
      Hope this helps,
