Old School Kicks

I’m kicking off my stilettoed sandals and embracing footwear that doesn’t wear me out. It's the summer of the sneaker and I couldn't be happier.

This season, it’s time to delve into the fashion archives, with so many oldies but goodies reappearing on store shelves.   The best part is most of these styles look good not only with shorts and pants but also compliment casual skirts and dresses.  Here are my must-haves kicks of 2014.

Thanks to a re-launch in January and an unofficial endorsement at Paris Fashion Week, Stan Smiths are the sneaker to wear this summer and into fall.  They aren’t so easy to get your hands on.  (Which of course makes me want them all the more.) I had to scour the world, virtual and otherwise, to get my hands on these.  Ladies, I recommend raiding the kids’ shoe department, which is where I got mine.  Subtract two sizes to find your own. Stan Smiths fit a bit small, I suggest going up half a size.

Rivalling the Stan Smiths in the must-have department, slip-ons are trend that blossomed in spring and is continuing full force into summer and fall.  Fortunately, they’re a lot easier to find that the Adidas.  From Jimmy Choo, to the original Vans, to Steve Madden, almost every brand is coming out with its own version.  I like these faux snakeskin sneakers from Joie for warmer climes. I plan to go with a heavier sole and leather uppers for fall and beyond.  If money is no object, check out this studded pair from Saint Laurent.  Sweet.

Converse never seem to go out of style.  The All Star was designed for basketball players 97 years ago (!!) and they’re still going strong.  (I also love the Chuck Taylors.) High top or low, I like to have a few of these puppies in my closet at all times.  The best part is they’re affordable. Converse fit big, I always go down half a size.

Want to make like you’re Italian?  Then you don’t want to be without your Supergas. A brand that used to be almost impossible to find this side of the Atlantic is now available in every shade at almost every shoe store.  White or black canvas go with everything but I keep hearing that orange is the new black? Though I’m also kind of digging The Row’s take on this classic style.  Separate sneaker closet perhaps?
