Happy 12th Anniversary, The Shopping Bags!

Monday, 25 March 2013

It's been a dozen years since Anna & I officially began our TV adventures together, which started with The Shopping Bags. We hatched our plans in 1999 while working at a local TV news station, and by spring 2001, we signed our first deal and started shooting. We had many great moments, and hairstyles, during those 7 seasons filming The Shopping Bags!

The top photo was from one of the first professional photo shoots we ever did. It must have been in about 1999 or 2000.

ak-first-bags-provinceThis was one of the first “official” pictures we took together, in my back yard, when we were writing as The Shopping Bags for the Vancouver Province newspaper. Anna was supposed to be the “serious” one and I was the more “casual” one. Whatever that means! I just want to know what the heck am I wearing?!?

This was our first shooting trip to New York for The Shopping Bags, in 2001. We are sitting in the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, waiting for the day to begin. Clearly Anna was having some anxiety over it!

We camped out on the lawn of the Banff Springs Hotel, testing sleeping bags, while our crew was safely tucked inside. It actually started to snow one of nights we were out there!

Hiking in the Rockies to test god knows what!? It was a nice quiet moment. I still have that Gortex jacket actually!

This was a photo we used for, you guessed it, Shopping Bags publicity. It was a really popular one. It was a fun shoot, and so colourful.

ak-gemini awards2

At our first Gemini awards in 2002, where The Shopping Bags was nominated for Best Practical Information Series. This was before we found out that we lost! Still, we were excited to be there.

This is from one of my favourite photo shoots ever. We were goofing around, pretending I had a secret I was sharing with Anna. We ended up using a succession of these photos for media kit.

With Rocco DiSpirito at Whole Foods in New York. We were doing a segment on saving money in the grocery store. He was super sweet!

We shot this at The Bay, for Christmas obviously. Don’t we look angelic??

With Randy Bachman himself, in my living room! We were testing mini stereos, basically boom boxes. That will give you some idea of how long ago it was!

We were testing exercise equipment and hamming it up with these 1980s style aerobics outfits. They were so comfortable that we ended up going out in them that Halloween. Work it sister!

We were in Cannes, France for MIP, a TV conference. We always have the best time there, so many good restaurants—uh, rather meetings! So many good meetings!

We were doing a segment on cruises, with our mothers! We were also testing walking sandals, hence the brightly-coloured footwear. We certainly did a lot of loops of that upper deck!

We never used any of this series of photos from a publicity shoot in 2007, probably because we were wearing workout tops! Not sure why we thought that was a good idea.

2007: From one of our last Shopping Bags episodes, in Maui! We were testing sunscreen and surfboards. That was definitely a shoot to remember!

Which is your favourite photo from above? I love them all!

I love them all too. 😉 I like how your 2 smiles never changed over the years. They all look the same.

I really liked that show, but then I also had a major crush on Anna :), being a vegan I really don’t watch their cooking shows though..

    • annaandkristina

Hi Phil, unfortunately no, but the old episodes are running on OWN Canada many times throughout the week!

Sure hope so, I have watched the same shows over & Over again. Is there anything as your fans to get your shows back on TV.

Thanks for the pics, the cruise segment with your moms & the walking sandals was one of my favorite episodes!

I still love to watch old episodes, even if I have seen them many times. I appreciate that, as Canadians, you often test items that I can actually purchase in my own local store. I hope you keep doing more cooking shows for years to come!

    • annaandkristina

      Thanks Dee!

I love the picture of you two at the Geminis in ’02…your smiles are gleaming and you can really see the excitement you gals had for what you had accomplished in your first year of the show…and to be nominated! Even though you didn’t win that night, you ladies have certainly won the hearts of your fans for 12 years and counting!
    Happy anniversary Anna & Kristina!

    • annaandkristina

      Thanks Kelly!

I love the black & white picture the best. You both look very happy.

    • annaandkristina

      Thank you!

  • GTA_John

I really like those “back in the day” photos. It’s fascinating to see how little both of you have changed.

I’d also enjoy a couple of “back in the day” blog entries where you talk about what you went through developing the concepts and presenting them to potential backers.

I won’t ask you both to give us “warts and all” blog post(s). But I’m sure there are moments when one of you wanted to do something and the other didn’t — and there could be some good lessons learned for the rest of us. So you can hide the gory details but a broad strokes description (you know … the “true love never runs smooth” sort of thing) would be riveting.

Looking forward to your new series … and hoping you can work “bags” into the title!

    • annaandkristina

Thanks John! We’ve got a blog coming up that talks about some of our early challenges. Stay tuned!

Anna totally looks like Workout Barbie in the workout one.

Colourful shopping bags, Geminis and Secret are my top three, in no particular order.

    • annaandkristina

Thanks Laura! Those workout outfits have since gone into the costume trunk.
