Style Tips: Accessorize the Little Black Dress

Monday, 18 May 2009 | Tags: , ,

Introduced by Coco Chanel in 1926, the little black dress (or LBD) is a wardrobe staple every woman should own. And its versatility is limited only by your imagination. We talk to a style expert to learn some LBD tricks.

We’ve all seen the little black dress at cocktail parties, but did you know how easy it is to wear to work or out on the town? According to celebrity “stylist at large” Tracey Pincott, it can be as easy as changing your shoes and jewelry.

LBD at the Office

Most offices require conservative styling, but you can still wear pieces that express your individuality.

  • Add a cardigan or crop blazer in a great colour.

  • Wear a colourful turtleneck or collared shirt underneath a sleeveless dress.

  •  Try a belt that highlights your waist for a feminine yet professional look.

  • Stick to simple, black, opaque tights. If your office is more casual, throw on some fun patterned stockings.

  • A large, structured handbag with silver/gold detailing adds interest.

  • Pearl, diamond stud or small hoop earrings work with this look.

  • A statement watch creates a conversation piece.

  • Shoes should stay neutral and simple. Pumps or flats work well in a conservative office. Add texture with snakeskin or suede material.

LBD After Work

To dress up your LBD after a day at the office, shed some conservative pieces and add a bit of edge.

  • Wear a fun pair of heels. Stilettos will make your legs look extra long. A bright colour will really pop.

  • On your legs, go bare (warm months) or try some coloured tights in cooler months with a pair of ankle boots.

  • A bright scarf or pashmina adds colour around your face.

  • Go big on jewelry with a stack of bangles, chunky cocktail rings, or layered necklaces.

  • For evening, grab a small informal clutch or wristlet, just big enough to fit your necessities, or go purseless if you’ve got somewhere else to stash your things. Or if you aren’t headed to the dance floor, your big structured bag from the office (in black) will also work.

LBD at a Formal Party

When wearing the little black dress for its intended purpose, keep things simple and elegant.

  • Add sparkle with sleek earrings or a necklace (depending on the neckline style of your dress.)

  • For shoes, less is more. Wear a cocktail show with added colour, but choose a style that is delicate and that shows off the shape of your foot.

  • An elegant clutch with beading or embroidery detail is a perfect evening accessory.

  • Don’t forget to take your watch off, unless it’s delicate or jeweled.

So don’t just keep your LBD for special occasions. Get the most out of it that you can by having fun and being creative with your accessories!
