Top 3 things I learned from Jillian Michaels

Wednesday, 10 April 2013

Last night, our trusty story producer Lauren headed to see Jillian Michaels' live show in Vancouver to learn how to "Maximize Your Life". The show ran a BIT long, but here are a few tips she wanted to share with the A&K community:

1. There are 56 different names for SUGAR. This isn’t just for fun. Companies often use different names for sugar on the ingredient list because if they only called it sugar it would OFTEN be the #1 ingredient in the food and you would be less likely to buy it. Keep your eyes peeled for a long list of names that likely end in -ose (glucose, fructose, succrose, saccharose, xylose, etc).

2.  If you can’t AFFORD to buy organic, to avoid ingesting nasty pesticides, buy thick skinned fruits (like the clean 15). And remember to never buy anything that has ingredients you can’t pronounce. (If you wouldn’t put bug spray or bleach in your mouth, why allow it to be in your food?)

3. Don’t use machines at the gym that isolate one muscle or muscle group. You will burn less calories and be more prone to injury. Just use the weight of your own body to do things like push ups, squats, lunges, etc.

Anyone else catch her show in Canada or the US? Feel free to share any gems you learned!
